Discover what makes living and working in Spain so special.
ECONOMIC HUB SPAIN
Spain ranks among the largest and most significant economies in the eurozone. The country is a leader in sectors such as tourism, agriculture, automotive manufacturing, renewable energies and construction. Madrid and Barcelona, as global economic centres and the seats of numerous international corporations, are particularly attractive for expats. Thanks to EU freedom of movement, access to the Spanish labour market for Germans is completely straightforward. The supply of academic skilled workers is good, while dual vocational training modelled on the German system is still rare but growing..
Attractive labor market
The Spanish labour market offers German skilled professionals excellent prospects, especially in technical and digital professions. The most in‑demand occupations in 2026 include AI engineers, IT system architects, cybersecurity specialists, data analysts, renewable energy engineers, as well as skilled workers in healthcare, logistics and construction. The average gross monthly salary in 2026 is around €2,531, while the statutory minimum wage has been raised to €1,221 gross per month (14 payments per year). Particularly good career opportunities exist in the dynamic metropolises of Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Málaga. Spanish work culture is characterised by team spirit, creativity and a good work‑life balance.
HOLIDAYS AND WORKING HOURS
In Spain, employees are entitled to at least 30 days of holiday per year (including public holidays, which vary by region). Working hours are generally 40 hours per week, with the siesta – the traditional lunch break – still practised especially in smaller towns and in the south of the country. The numerous local fiestas, which often serve as bridge days, are also highly valued and brighten up the working day.
CULTURE – PASSION AND JOY OF LIVING
Spain delights with a fascinating and extremely vibrant culture, strongly shaped by its history and language. From the exciting fiestas such as Las Fallas in Valencia and La Tomatina in Buñol, through the deep religious tradition of Semana Santa, to the incomparable passion of flamenco – exciting festivals take place all year round. Spanish cuisine (paella, jamón ibérico, gazpacho, tapas, churros) is among the most popular in the world and is a central part of social togetherness. Cultural characteristics include the more pronounced physical contact culture (greeting with two kisses) and the fact that dinner is often taken after 9 p.m.
QUALITY OF LIFE AND COST OF LIVING
Spain offers a high quality of life, characterised by an excellent healthcare system, a good education system and a rich cultural infrastructure. The cost of living is below the German level in many regions, with rental prices in Madrid and Barcelona as well as on the coast being significantly higher than inland. For a single person, monthly living expenses (excluding rent) are about €715, and for a family of four about €2,590. The average rent per square metre for apartments in 2026 is around €14.20, with Madrid (€20.09/m²) and Barcelona (similar high prices) being the most expensive cities. A monthly ticket for public transport in Madrid costs about €55, in Barcelona about €40.
Etiquette in the workplace
Spanish work culture places great importance on personal relationships and team spirit. Greeting with a handshake is customary, and among colleagues and acquaintances also greeting with two kisses (one on each cheek). Unlike in Germany, communication is often more indirect, and great importance is placed on respectful interaction. Punctuality is expected, but not handled as strictly as in Germany – a delay of five to ten minutes is generally tolerated. Business meetings are well structured, but often begin with personal conversation.
TRANSPORT SYSTEM – WELL CONNECTED IN EUROPE
The Spanish transport system is excellently developed. The state railway company Renfe operates a dense network of high‑speed trains (AVE) connecting the major cities of Spain as well as connections to France and Portugal. In Madrid and Barcelona, the public transport networks with metro, buses and suburban trains are very well developed. The motorway network is also very well developed, with many major cities having established low‑emission zones (Zonas de Bajas Emisiones – ZBE) that prohibit entry to vehicles with high pollutant emissions.
LIVING IN SPAIN
Living in Spain can vary greatly depending on the region. From elegant city apartments in the centre of Madrid to sun‑drenched villas on the Costa del Sol to rural fincas in Andalusia, there are numerous options. Rental prices in Madrid and Barcelona are the highest, averaging €900–1,200 for a one‑bedroom apartment in the city centre, while cities such as Valencia, Seville or Málaga offer cheaper alternatives. When searching for accommodation, proof of income (the last three payslips) as well as proof of identity are generally required. The deposit is generally one month's rent for unfurnished apartments and often two months' rent for furnished apartments. KOCH Moving Logistics supports you in navigating the Spanish property market.
