Moving to the Netherlands: Language learning, integration and insurance options – Your new start in the Netherlands with KOCH Moving Logistics

Moving to the Netherlands is a significant step that requires careful preparation. The Netherlands combine a centuries‑old tradition of international trade with the highest quality of life and economic dynamism, making it an attractive destination for international skilled professionals and families. For successful integration, language skills, a good understanding of cultural peculiarities and knowledge of the insurance system are crucial.

LEARNING DUTCH: WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

For German‑speaking immigrants, the linguistic situation in the Netherlands is simple at first glance: the official language is Dutch, a Germanic language structurally similar to German. Many words are similar – for example appel (Apfel), brood (Brot) or vader (Vater). The biggest challenge is pronunciation: the characteristic guttural sound of the "g" (as in "goedemiddag") and the peculiar pronunciation of "ui" and "eu" require practice. But do not worry: the Dutch are known for their excellent English skills, and English is spoken in everyday life by many, especially in the larger cities. Foreigners are not expected to speak perfect Dutch, but it is a great help and a sign of respect if you at least understand the local language and can communicate in Dutch.

How best to learn Dutch?

TAKE LANGUAGE COURSES: Many language schools offer courses in Dutch as a foreign language (NT2 – Nederlands als Tweede Taal), which provide a solid foundation for written correspondence and formal situations. The courses at the Volksuniversiteit or the ROC (Regional Training Centre) are particularly recommended.

USE ONLINE RESOURCES: Digital platforms and apps such as Duolingo, Babbel or Memrise help build vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar. The YouTube channel "Learn Dutch with Kim" is also very popular.

PRACTICE IN EVERYDAY LIFE: Talking to colleagues, neighbours or when shopping is the most effective method for learning linguistic nuances. Do not hesitate to speak Dutch – the Dutch appreciate honest efforts.

COMPULSORY INTEGRATION (INBURGERINGSPLICHT): For many immigrants, the Netherlands have a statutory integration obligation. This means that you must complete an integration course within three years of your arrival and pass the civic integration examination (Inburgeringsexamen). The exam includes language skills at least at level B1 as well as knowledge of Dutch society.

INTEGRATION INTO DUTCH SOCIETY: TIPS FOR GERMANS

Integration into a new country is a process that requires openness and a willingness to adapt. Here are some specific tips to make your start easier.

Famous Dutch directness is a core value and a sign of respect. The Dutch like to say "yes" or "no" directly, do not beat around the bush, and appreciate open, honest communication. What foreigners sometimes perceive as rude is in the Netherlands an expression of respect and efficiency – the other person is taking you seriously. Plan your conversations so that you can express your opinion clearly and factually.

EVERYDAY MANNERS

GREETINGS: A friendly "Hallo" or "Goedendag" opens many doors. For formal occasions, a handshake is given; among acquaintances, three cheek kisses (left‑right‑left) are common – but only once a certain familiarity has been established.

PER „JE“ / PER „U“: Dutch distinguishes between the formal "u" and the informal "je/jij". In business settings and with authorities, "u" is generally used; among colleagues and friends, the familiar "je" quickly becomes common.

PUNCTUALITY IS KEY: Punctuality is as highly valued in the Netherlands as it is in Germany. Arriving late without apologising can be considered very rude. Schedule your appointments so that you arrive on time or even a few minutes early.

THINK ABOULT CLUBS (verenigingen): Joining a local club (football club, tennis club, music society, choir or volunteer organisation) is an excellent way to meet new people and integrate.

WHAT YOU SHOULD AVOID:

SPEAKING TOO LOUDLY: The Dutch value rather quiet, pleasant conversation. Speaking too loudly, especially on trains, buses and in restaurants, is considered disruptive.

UNANNOUNCED VISITS: In the Netherlands, it is customary to announce visits in advance. Dropping by spontaneously without prior notice is often perceived as intrusive.

Moving to the Netherlands requires structured preparation and cultural sensitivity. With openness, sound planning and a willingness to engage with the linguistic and cultural peculiarities, your new start can be shaped sustainably. The Netherlands not only offer a high quality of life and an attractive working environment, but also an open, tolerant society that makes it easy for newcomers to put down roots.
