Moving to Austria: Language learning, integration and insurance options – Your new start in the Alpine republic with KOCH Moving Logistics
Moving to Austria is a significant step that requires careful preparation. Austria combines centuries‑old tradition with the highest quality of life and economic strength, making it an attractive destination for international skilled professionals and families. For successful integration, language skills, a good understanding of cultural peculiarities and knowledge of the insurance system are crucial.
LANGUAGE IN AUSTRIA: AUSTRIAN GERMAN AND REGIONAL DIVERSITY
German is the legally established official language in Austria, with Austrian German representing an independent national variety of the German language. As a native German speaker, you will be able to communicate without problems in Austria, as standardised High German is used in all official areas, in schools, authorities and the media.
However, the Austrian linguistic landscape is rich in special features. The vocabulary has many characteristic differences from German German – for example, "Jänner" instead of "Januar", "Paradeiser" instead of "Tomate", "Erdäpfel" instead of "Kartoffeln", and "Spital" instead of "Krankenhaus". These terms are not dialect but part of standardised Austrian High German. In addition, strong regional dialects exist, used mainly in everyday spoken language. While Bavarian dialects predominate in most federal states, Alemannic dialects are spoken in Tyrol and Vorarlberg.
For German‑speaking immigrants, language acquisition is therefore comparatively easy. Nevertheless, it is a sign of respect and facilitates daily communication if you know the most important Austriacisms and adapt to regional peculiarities. Depending on the region, colloquial language varies, and in rural areas the dialect is often more pronounced than in large cities.
LEARNING GERMAN AND INTEGRATION: OFFERS FOR IMMIGRANTS
German language skills are the essential key to successful integration in Austria. A wide range of German courses is available for immigrants. The Austrian Integration Fund (ÖIF) offers subsidised German courses at around 250 locations throughout Austria – from literacy to language level C1.
The Austrian education system also has an established system of German language support for children whose mother tongue is not German. From the 2026/27 school year, schools can design German support autonomously. However, the existing model of German support classes and courses remains available. The goal is the early and intensive learning of German as the language of instruction so that all children can participate in regular lessons.
Integration into Austrian society is supported by a broad offer of integration courses. According to the new regulation of 2025, compulsory integration tests are at the centre, conducted by the Austrian Integration Fund (ÖIF). These courses not only teach language skills but also knowledge about the Austrian legal system, history, culture and values of the country. For certain residence titles, proof of German language skills at level A2 (written) or B1 (spoken) may be required.
POLITENESS AND ETIQUETTE IN AUSTRIA
In Austria, great importance is placed on politeness and formal address. Austrian manners differ from Germany in several respects:
– FORMAL ADDRESS (USING "SIE"): Unlike in many German‑speaking countries, using the formal "Sie" is very important in Austria, even in everyday situations such as shopping or dealing with authorities. The informal "du" is reserved for relatives, close friends and, increasingly, younger colleagues. Using "du" without being invited to do so can quickly be perceived as disrespectful.
– TITLE CULTURE: In formal contexts, especially in authorities, business and academic environments, academic degrees (Mag., Dr., etc.) are actively used. It is quite common to address a person as "Herr Magister" or "Frau Doktor" if the academic degree is known.
– GREETINGS: A firm handshake with direct eye contact is the usual greeting and farewell. In more informal situations, especially in the countryside or in regions close to Bavaria, "Servus" or "Grüß Gott" is common. A friendly "Grüß Gott" opens many doors. In Vienna, greeting with a warm "Servus" among acquaintances is also common.
– DRESS AND APPEARANCE: Compared to Germany, more emphasis is placed on neat, often somewhat more conservative clothing in professional environments in Austria, although requirements vary by industry. In creative professions or start‑ups, the dress code is often more casual.
WHAT YOU SHOULD AVOID:
– Comparisons with Germany: Avoid constant comparisons such as "In Germany we do that better". This can quickly come across as hurtful.
– Too loud and dominant behaviour: Austrians appreciate a balanced, polite and reserved manner. Compared to some other German‑speaking countries, direct criticism is often less welcome.
