Moving to Spain: Language learning, integration and insurance options – Your new start in España with KOCH Moving Logistics

Moving to Spain is a significant step that requires careful preparation. Spain combines a centuries‑old cultural tradition with a strong economy and high quality of life, making it an attractive destination for skilled professionals, families and retirees from all over the world. For successful integration, good Spanish language skills, an understanding of cultural peculiarities and knowledge of the Spanish insurance system are crucial.

THE LANGUAGE IN SPAIN: THE KEY TO SUCCESSFUL INTEGRATION

The Spanish language is the key to successful integration in Spain. Even though many Spanish people in tourist regions and international companies speak English, Spanish language skills make everyday life considerably easier – from dealing with authorities to contacting neighbours to professional life. Especially in rural regions, Spanish language skills are essential. For German‑speaking immigrants, the linguistic situation in Spain is a challenge, but one that can be managed with structure. While international companies in Madrid, Barcelona and other major cities often use English as a working language, for everyday life and for official procedures, Spanish language skills are necessary.

HOW BEST TO LEARN THE LANGUAGE?

LOCAL LANGUAGE COURSES: The Instituto Cervantes offers Spanish courses for every level throughout Spain, based on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Many universities also offer Spanish courses for foreigners – for example, the Universidad Complutense in Madrid or the University of Barcelona. Official language schools (Escuelas Oficiales de Idiomas) also offer low‑cost courses that are recognised throughout Spain.

ONLINE RESOURCES: Digital platforms and apps such as Duolingo, Babbel, Memrise or Lengalia can sharpen vocabulary and listening comprehension for everyday life.

PRACTICE IN EVERYDAY LIFE: Talking to colleagues and neighbours is the most effective method for learning Spanish. Force yourself to speak Spanish, even if it is difficult at first.

FREE OFFERS: The Spanish government offers low‑cost Spanish courses for immigrants through the official language schools (EOI)..

SPANISH MEDIA: Watch Spanish television (e.g., RTVE), listen to Spanish radio stations (Cadena SER, COPE) and read Spanish newspapers (El País, El Mundo) – this improves listening comprehension and expands vocabulary.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS FOR RESIDENCE AND NATURALISATION

For Spanish citizenship by residence (por residencia), there are clear language requirements. German citizens must, after ten years of legal residence in Spain, meet the following requirements for naturalisation: proof of Spanish language skills at level A2 of the CEFR and passing the CCSE test (Conocimientos Constitucionales y Socioculturales de España), which tests knowledge of the Spanish constitution, history, culture and society. The CCSE test consists of 25 questions, of which at least 15 must be answered correctly (60% pass rate). The registration fee is €85, and the test lasts 45 minutes. For EU citizens (such as Germans), the required period of residence for naturalisation is ten years of uninterrupted legal residence in Spain. Important: Only years of residence with valid registration (Empadronamiento) and residence with a residence permit (Residencia) count.

INTEGRATION INTO SPANISH SOCIETY: TIPS FOR GERMANS

Integration into a new country is a process that requires openness and a willingness to adapt. Germany and Spain are connected by a long shared history and numerous cultural exchanges. German‑Spanish cooperation is an important pillar of European integration.

POLITENESS AND ETIQUETTE IN EVERYDAY LIFE

Spanish culture places great importance on personal relationships and warmth. Here are some important tips for your daily life:

GREETINGS: Among friends, family and acquaintances, two cheek kisses ("dos besos") are common – starting on the right. In a business context, a firm handshake with direct eye contact is the common greeting. A friendly "Buenos días" (Good morning) or "Buenas tardes" (Good afternoon) is always appropriate.

PUNCTUALITY: In Spain, punctuality is expected, but not handled as strictly as in Germany – a delay of five to ten minutes is generally tolerated. For business appointments, however, strict punctuality is appropriate.

DRESS CODE: Dress code is context‑dependent. In a professional environment, neat, classic business attire is worn. In everyday life and leisure time, casual but neat clothing is common.

CONVERSATION TOPICS: Good conversation topics are food and wine, art, travel, football (especially La Liga) and the region. Avoid becoming too personal – questions about salary or private circumstances are unusual.

CLUBS AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Joining a local club – a sports club (football, tennis, golf), a cultural club, a flamenco studio or a voluntary organisation – is an excellent way to meet new people and integrate. Spain has a very vibrant club culture. Tandem programmes, where you learn Spanish and in return offer your German, are also an effective way to get to know Spanish people. The German community in Spain is very active – for example in Mallorca, on the Costa Blanca or in Madrid – and offers numerous networks and events to meet like‑minded people and exchange experiences.

INTEGRATION THROUGH EDUCATION AND SPECIFIC OFFERS

The Spanish government offers integration courses for non‑EU citizens, consisting of language courses and the provision of basic knowledge about Spanish society. The network of German‑Spanish societies throughout Spain – for example in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Mallorca – also offers an excellent opportunity for Germans to network. German companies with branches in Spain (such as Siemens, Volkswagen, Bosch or Mercedes‑Benz) offer professional and financial advantages as well as enormous assistance in arriving in the country, making contacts and starting successful integration.
