QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR MOVE TO NORWAY?
MOVING TO NORWAY
Daily life
Living and working in Norway combines one of the highest qualities of life in the world with a relaxed society characterised by equality and a love of nature. Norway ranks among the wealthiest economies in Europe, driven by oil and gas production, maritime industry, hydropower and a growing technology sector. The Norwegian lifestyle, with friluftsliv (joy of the outdoors) and a pronounced work‑life balance, enables a unique connection between career and leisure. KOCH Moving Logistics reliably accompanies you to this hospitable country.

ENTRY INTO NORWAY
Residence regulations
For German citizens, entry into Norway is extremely straightforward thanks to the Schengen Agreement: you can enter visa‑free with a valid identity card or passport and stay for up to three months. For a longer stay, you do not need a work permit, but you must register with the local police after entry. The crucial thing is the Norwegian identification number (D‑number for temporary stays, fødselsnummer for permanent stays), which is your access code to authorities, banks and the healthcare system. KOCH Moving Logistics reliably accompanies you on your path to this progressive and liveable country.
LIVING IN NORWAY
Real estate market
The Norwegian property market – especially in major cities – is highly competitive. From elegant city apartments in Oslo to cosy wooden houses in Bergen to fjord properties in Vestlandet, there is a wide selection. Rental prices rose by 3.4 percent year‑on‑year in the first quarter of 2026; in Oslo, a one‑bedroom apartment costs about 18,000 NOK (approx. 1,550 euros) per month. Bergen recorded the strongest growth at 8.9 percent. KOCH Moving Logistics helps you find suitable accommodation and supports you in navigating the Norwegian property market.

WORKING IN NORWAY
Job opportunities for Germans
Norwegian work culture is characterised by flat hierarchies, team spirit and personal responsibility. German skilled professionals are in demand especially in healthcare (nurses, doctors, elderly care workers), construction (tradespeople, electricians), engineering (energy, oil, gas) and IT. Thanks to EFTA/EU freedom of movement, you do not need a work permit. The average gross annual salary is about 68,420 euros, and the weekly working time is 37.5 hours. KOCH Moving Logistics helps you discover the right job opportunities for expats, freelancers and entrepreneurs.
EDUCATION IN NORWAY
Schools for expats
Expats have access to an excellent, largely free education system from primary school to university. The ten‑year compulsory education (ages 6‑16) comprises barneskole (grades 1‑7) and ungdomsskole (grades 8‑10). Upper secondary school (videregående skole, grades 11‑13) entitles students to higher education. The German‑Norwegian School in Oslo (DENOSO) offers dual qualifications. International schools in Oslo, Bergen and Stavanger cost between 120,000 and 200,000 NOK per year. KOCH Moving Logistics helps you find the best options for your children.

IMPORTANT ASPECTS – NORWAY
Healthcare system
The tax‑financed healthcare system (helsenorge.no) provides all legal residents with a fødselsnummer free or subsidised access to GPs, specialists and hospitals. The annual deductible is capped at 2,040 NOK. Dental care is only partially covered. EU citizens use the EHIC for temporary stays. Many expats take out private supplementary insurance to obtain faster appointments. KOCH Moving Logistics helps you find your way around the Norwegian healthcare system.
FINANCES
Tax system in Norway
The progressive tax system consists of a general income tax of 22% on income after deductions, a progressive surtax (trinnskatt) with rates up to 17.8%, and a social security contribution of 7.6% on gross income. The maximum marginal tax rate is about 47.4%. The personal allowance is 114,210 NOK. The tax return is digitally pre‑filled. A double taxation agreement with Germany prevents double taxation. KOCH Moving Logistics provides valuable assistance for your financial planning.

NORWEGIAN CULTURE
Cultural characteristics
Norwegian culture is strongly shaped by Viking tradition, Lutheran Christianity and the culture of equality. Friluftsliv – the joy of outdoor activities – is celebrated in every season. "Ta det med ro" (take it easy) is a common saying. Constitution Day on 17 May is celebrated with parades and bunad costumes. Midsummer (Sankthansaften) on 23 June features huge bonfires. The cuisine includes salmon, reindeer, fenalår and brunost.
EMIGRATING TO NORWAY
Leisure and recreation
Norway is a paradise for nature lovers: over 20,000 kilometres of signposted hiking trails lead to highlights such as Preikestolen and Trolltunga. In winter, ski resorts such as Hemsedal, Trysil and Hafjell attract visitors. The coasts offer fishing, kayaking and whale safaris. The midnight sun and the northern lights are world‑famous natural phenomena. The most popular destinations include the Geirangerfjord, the Lofoten Islands and the North Cape. KOCH Moving Logistics supports you in settling in quickly.
