QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR MOVE TO SWEDEN?

MOVING TO SWEDEN

Daily life

Living and working in Sweden combines one of the highest qualities of life in the world with a relaxed society characterised by sustainability and equality. Sweden ranks among the most innovative and competitive economies in Europe, driven by global companies such as IKEA, Volvo, Ericsson and Spotify, and is a leader in technology, forestry, renewable energy and life sciences. The Swedish way of life, shaped by the concepts of lagom (the principle of the right amount) and fika (the art of the coffee break), enables a unique connection between career and leisure. KOCH Moving Logistics reliably accompanies you on your path to this sustainable and liveable country.

ENTRY INTO SWEDEN

Residence regulations

For German citizens, entry into Sweden is extremely straightforward thanks to EU/EEA membership: you can enter visa‑free with a valid identity card or passport, and live and work immediately. For the first three months, you do not need to register. The crucial thing for everyday life is your Swedish identification number. Once you have a job and are staying for more than one year, you will receive a personnummer (eleven‑digit). For shorter stays, a samordningsnummer is issued. This number is the key to the healthcare system, banking and authorities – similar to the tax ID in Germany, but even more central. For registration, you must submit your employment contract, ID, registration certificate from Germany and a birth certificate to the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket), among other documents. KOCH Moving Logistics reliably accompanies you on your path.

LIVING IN SWEDEN

Real estate market

The Swedish property market works differently from Germany. While we rent in Germany, owner‑occupied apartments or houses are very common in Sweden. Rental apartments are scarce, especially in the major cities, and years‑long waiting lists are common on the public market. Many emigrants therefore turn to the so‑called informal market (private agents, estate agents) or buy an apartment. If you move into a cooperative apartment, you pay a cooperative share and a monthly fee. KOCH Moving Logistics helps you navigate the Swedish property market.

WORKING IN SWEDEN

Job opportunities for Germans

Working in Sweden means being part of a modern, egalitarian work culture. Hierarchies are flat, titles hardly matter. Teamwork, personal responsibility and a healthy work‑life balance are the focus – unlike in Germany, where formal titles and overtime are still common in some sectors. Statutory holiday entitlement is 25 days (5 weeks). The average weekly working time is about 39 hours (similar to Germany). German skilled professionals are in high demand, especially in IT/data (AI, software development, cybersecurity), in the fields of mechanical engineering, (energy, mechanical engineering), healthcare and education. The average gross annual salary in Sweden is about 61,000 euros (slightly below the German level), with the cost of living being about 20‑30 percent higher. KOCH Moving Logistics supports you with your job search.

EDUCATION IN SWEDEN

Schools for expats

Expats have access to an excellent, free education system. Compulsory schooling lasts nine years (ages 6 to 16). The school is not divided into different types (unlike Germany's Hauptschule, Realschule and Gymnasium). Textbooks and materials are provided and remain at school. For the youngest children, there are free places in pre‑school (förskola). German families often prefer German schools (e.g., in Stockholm) as well as international schools (IB). A special highlight: "free schools" (friskolor) are state‑subsidised private schools – a model that does not exist in Germany in this form. KOCH Moving Logistics helps with school choice.

IMPORTANT ASPECTS – SWEDEN

Healthcare system

The Swedish healthcare system is tax‑financed and provides all residents with high‑quality care at low out‑of‑pocket costs. Healthcare is decentralised via the regioner (comparable to the German federal states). Private supplementary insurance is optional but offers faster access to specialists and private clinics – unlike in Germany, private insurance does not make up nearly 5 percent of the market, but is rather a supplement in the low single‑digit percentage range. KOCH Moving Logistics helps you find your way around the Swedish healthcare system.

FINANCES

Tax system in Sweden

The Swedish tax system is progressive. Income tax is withheld and is divided into municipal tax (about 29‑35 percent depending on the municipality) and state tax (about 20 percent extra for income above the threshold). Taxpayers are taxed similarly to Germany, but employee contributions are slightly higher overall (about 44‑54 percent). The allowance is about 20,000 SEK (approx. 1,800 euros). The top tax rate is already applied from about 625,800 SEK (approx. 57,000 euros) – i.e., significantly earlier than in Germany (where the top tax rate only applies from about 66,700 euros of taxable income). The double taxation agreement prevents double taxation. KOCH Moving Logistics provides initial guidance.

SWEDISH CULTURE

Cultural characteristics

Sweden delights with a fascinating culture strongly shaped by the concepts of lagom (not too little, not too much – the ideal balance) and fika (shared coffee break, a social ritual). Important festivals: Midsummer (Midsommar) – the festival of light with flower crowns and dancing around the maypole; Lucia (13 December) – the festival of light in the darkest time with white gowns and candles. Julbord is the Swedish Christmas buffet, a festive tradition. The cuisine is hearty: köttbullar (meatballs), inlagd sill (pickled herring), Janssons frestelse (potato casserole) and prinsesstårta. KOCH Moving Logistics helps you discover these special features.

EMIGRATING TO SWEDEN

Leisure and recreation

Sweden is a paradise for lovers of outdoor life (friluftsliv). The right of public access (allemansrätten) allows you to camp in nature, pick berries and hike – even on private land. A special feature compared to Germany, where access to private forests is severely restricted. The capital Stockholm is built on 14 islands and offers a perfect mix of water, green spaces and urban life. In the north, the unique wildlife (moose, reindeer) and the northern lights attract visitors. The west attracts with the dramatic rocky coast of Bohuslän. In winter, the numerous well‑developed cross‑country trails in Scandinavia's national parks are ideal. KOCH Moving Logistics supports you in making your leisure time active.

LANGUAGE AND INTEGRATION

Learning Swedish

Swedish is the key to integration. All new arrivals have access to SFI (Swedish for Immigrants) – a free, state‑funded language course organised by the municipality. Here you learn the basics of the language as well as civics. In addition to classroom teaching, apps such as Duolingo and SVT Play (Swedish television with subtitles) help. Unlike in Germany, where integration is more privately organised, SFI is a nationwide, well‑organised offering of the Swedish welfare society. The Danes are known for their high English proficiency, but learning Swedish not only opens doors in your career but also creates the basis for a true sense of belonging. KOCH Moving Logistics provides valuable tips to help you settle in quickly.
