QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR MOVE TO DENMARK?
MOVING TO DENMARK
Daily life
Living and working in Denmark combines one of the highest qualities of life in Europe with a relaxed society characterised by trust and equality. Denmark ranks among the most innovative and competitive economies in the EU and offers attractive career opportunities in sectors such as renewable energy (especially wind power), life sciences, information technology, design, agriculture and maritime industries. The Danish way of life, shaped by hygge (cosiness), work‑life balance and a pronounced cycling culture, enables a unique connection between career and leisure. KOCH Moving Logistics reliably accompanies you on your path to this hospitable and economically strong country.

ENTRY INTO DENMARK
Residence regulations
Entry into Denmark is extremely straightforward for German citizens. Thanks to EU freedom of movement, you can enter visa‑free with a valid identity card or passport and stay in the country for up to three months without further formalities. For a longer stay (more than three months), as a German citizen you do not need a work permit, but you must register with the local citizen service (Borgerservice). The crucial thing is the Danish CPR number (Det Centrale Personregister), which is your personal identification code for all administrative and healthcare services. We recommend finding out about the required documents 4‑6 weeks before your move. KOCH Moving Logistics reliably accompanies you on your path to this progressive and liveable country.
LIVING IN DENMARK
Real estate market
The Danish property market – especially in the major cities – is highly competitive. From elegant city apartments in the centre of Copenhagen to classic Danish terraced houses (rækkehuse) to idyllic farmhouses in the rural regions of Zealand or Jutland, there is a wide selection. Rent prices in older buildings are legally capped (lejelovens lejeregulering), while new builds are largely market‑free. In Copenhagen, finding an apartment is particularly difficult – many use waiting lists of housing associations (almen bolig) or search via online platforms and networks. KOCH Moving Logistics helps you find suitable accommodation and supports you in navigating the Danish property market.

WORKING IN DENMARK
Job opportunities for Germans
Working in Denmark means being part of a highly modern, egalitarian work culture that values flat hierarchies, team spirit and personal responsibility. German skilled professionals are in demand in many sectors – especially in engineering (specifically wind energy), IT, healthcare, the life science sector and construction. Thanks to EU freedom of movement, you do not need a separate work permit. The Danish flexicurity model combines flexible hiring and dismissal rules with high social benefits and active labour market policies – a major difference from the German system. KOCH Moving Logistics helps you discover the right job opportunities for expats, freelancers and entrepreneurs.
EDUCATION IN DENMARK
Schools for expats
In Denmark, expats have access to an excellent, free education system – from primary school (folkeskole) to university. The Danish school system comprises a one‑year pre‑school class (børnehaveklasse), nine years of primary school (grades 1 to 9) and an optional 10th grade. Secondary education includes the academically oriented gymnasium (STX), the business gymnasium (HHX) and the technical gymnasium (HTX). A special feature is the efterskole – boarding schools for young people aged 14 to 18, which do not exist in Germany in this form. For German families, the German overseas schools offer a familiar alternative: the German School Copenhagen (private school) teaches according to German curricula and leads to the Abitur. In addition, there are international schools such as the Copenhagen International School (IB) and the European School. KOCH Moving Logistics helps you find the best options for your children.

IMPORTANT ASPECTS – DENMARK
Healthcare system
The Danish healthcare system (sundhedsvæsenet) is tax‑financed and provides all legal residents with a CPR number free access to general practitioners, specialists, hospitals and emergency care – unlike in Germany, there are no co‑payments for doctor visits. However, dental care for adults is only partially free. EU citizens resident in Denmark register with their local GP after receiving their CPR number. Temporary visitors use the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Many expats also take out private health insurance (Sygesikring Danmark or private supplementary insurance) to obtain faster appointments and access to private clinics. KOCH Moving Logistics helps you find your way around the Danish healthcare system.
FINANCES
Tax system in Denmark
The Danish tax system is very progressive by international comparison and heavily taxes high incomes. There is a basic allowance (personfradrag, 2026 about 50,000 DKK). Employment income is subject to municipal income tax (approx. 25‑27%) and optional church tax. In addition, there is state income tax (bundskat) with a tax rate of 12.02% on income above the basic allowance, as well as the top tax (topskat) of 15% on income above a certain threshold (2026: approx. 600,000 DKK). The total tax burden can reach up to 55% – significantly higher than in Germany. However, social benefits, education and healthcare are comprehensive and free. Employees automatically receive an annual tax card (forskudsopgørelse). The tax return (årsopgørelse) is largely pre‑filled digitally and only needs to be corrected. KOCH Moving Logistics provides valuable assistance for your financial planning.

DANISH CULTURE
Cultural characteristics
Denmark delights with a fascinating, often idiosyncratic culture strongly shaped by its seafaring and Viking tradition, Lutheran Christianity and modern Nordic philosophy. From the luminous Christmas celebrations with light arches (lysbro) and dancing around the Christmas tree, to the traditional midsummer festival (Sankt Hans Aften) with large bonfires, to Fastelavn (Danish carnival) – sociable festivals take place all year round.
EMIGRATING TO DENMARK
Leisure and recreation
Denmark is a paradise for cyclists, nature lovers and families. The flat country is criss‑crossed by an excellent network of cycle paths – the Danes cycle in all weathers, and the long‑distance cycle routes such as the West Coast Route or the Baltic Sea Cycle Route are internationally known. The coasts with kilometres of sandy beaches invite swimming, sailing and kiting in summer. In autumn, the forests attract with mushrooms and berries; in winter, the cities transform into festive Christmas markets. The most popular destinations include the Copenhagen Opera House and Christiansborg Palace, the open‑air museum Den Gamle By in Aarhus, the impressive chalk cliffs on Møn, the Tivoli amusement park (one of the oldest attractions in the world) and Legoland in Billund. The island of Bornholm with its picturesque fishing villages is also a jewel. KOCH Moving Logistics supports you in settling in quickly.
